Flying Style: Hike & Fly
Possibly the highest top to bottom flight anywhere on Earth. To get to the take-off at around 5750m ASL, one hikes over a 5 - 6 day period through diverse alpine terrain to reach the summit at Uhuru Peak; the top of Africa's highest mountain which is technically a dormant volcano. Expect to spend 4 - 6 hours per day hiking, the ascent is gradual and requires moderate effort. Above 3500m ASL most people experience some of the symptoms of high altitude sickness which become more pronounced with increasing altitude. The summit day's hike begins with a midnight scramble up the scree slopes of the volcano's cone, reaching the rim at around sun-rise. This part of the hike is strenuous and made difficult by high altitude and cold. After warming up your hands with the rising sun, take flight if weather permits. Expect to be very fatigued and tired as a result of the high altitude, this is not to be underestimated. Weather conditions can be extreme at high altitude - clouds and windy conditions are present more often than not. We provide a complete package which is tailored specifically for paragliders to maximize your chances of flying off, including a 3 day window for possible launching from the summit. Wildlife safaris and other flying adventure add-on options available. Light weight paragliding gear and comprehensive travel insurance are a must.
